Maintaining a healthy toothbrush is one of the most important things to do in terms of dental hygiene. If you don’t have a healthy toothbrush, then you won’t heave healthy teeth; simple.

So, when is the best time for you to change your toothbrush? We at Bay Dental know how important it is, so here are a few signs when you should change your unhealthy toothbrush for a brand new one.

Are the Bristles Frayed?

If you are a vigorous brusher, then you will start to wear down your toothbrush in no time. If you start to see the bristles on your toothbrush becoming frayed, then it’s time for you to get a brand-new toothbrush. Frayed bristles aren’t good at cleaning your teeth – you wouldn’t brush your hair if the bristles were frayed, right?

This is particularly common in children since they tend to brush more rigorously than adults, so children should replace their toothbrushes more regularly than adults.

Have You Got a Cold or Flu?

If you aren’t feeling well, then you need to replace your toothbrush as soon as possible. When you brush your teeth while being ill, the bacteria in your mouth will harbour within the bristles until you brush your teeth next time. If you start to feel better, the bacteria in the bristles will enter your mouth and body, which can make you ill all over again.

Also, if you share a toothbrush holder with other people, then it’s important to replace the toothbrush as soon as possible since you don’t want to spread any illnesses amongst other people.

The General Rule of Thumb

A good guideline to go by, other than the indications aforementioned, is that you should replace your toothbrush once every 3 – 4 months. There are two different types of toothbrush you can choose from – manual and electric – but the most important thing is to make sure that it is clean.

Make sure that you clean your brush thoroughly under the tap once you’ve used it and allow it to dry upright in a toothbrush holder. If you keep your toothbrush in a closed container, this can lead to bacteria build up, so ensure it dries naturally; it’s the best way for your brush to be clean.
