If you’ve taken the plunge and opted to undergo our fantastic teeth whitening treatment to get a sparkling smile, you’ll want to make sure that you’re doing all in your power to keep your teeth as white and pearly as possible following the treatment.

Understanding what is expected of you following the treatment with regards to keeping your teeth as white as they are once your treatment is complete is important – after all, we want you to keep them as gleamingly white for as long as possible! Don’t worry, it’s quite difficult to stain your teeth again, but it’s always good to be cautious!

Follow the ‘White Diet’

Unless you have known someone undergo teeth whitening before or you have done extensive research on the aftercare procedure, you may not have ever heard of what is known as the ‘white diet’.

Following the treatment, the pores of your teeth will need some time to close over, which means eating coloured food can potentially cause the colouring to enter the tooth and dull the result. The ‘white diet’ is essentially a diet of colourless or white foods which should be followed for 24 hours following your treatments.

Your food intake can consist of the following:

  • White fruit such as apples and bananas
  • Plain, white boiled rice
  • White vegetables such as cauliflower and potato – but not chips!
  • White pitta bread
  • White meats such as chicken, turkey, or white fish such as cod. These should have no skin or seasonings and should not be fried.
  • White pasta with a sauce which is white
  • Skimmed milk
  • White cereals

This should be followed for a full 24 hours following your treatment to ensure that the pores of your teeth have time to close fully, reducing the risk of colouring seeping into the holes and contributing to further discolouration down the line. Essentially, stay away from foods which have colour to them!

Your Hygiene Routine

You may experience a small amount of sensitivity following a treatment, although not all patients will have this.

However, it’s advised that you avoid brushing your teeth straight after undergoing a treatment to avoid aggravating the pores of your teeth and potentially causing sensitivity.

As with the white diet, only use white toothpaste – here at Bay Dental, we have a toothpaste that you can use following our Enlighten treatment. Mouthwash should be avoided and, if you’re a smoker, it is important that you don’t smoke for at least 24 hours after you’ve undergone a treatment.

Post 24 Hours

After your 24 hours post-treatment period is over, you can go back to eating normally, but it is advised that you still watch what you eat in the long run. You’ve invested in a treatment which is sure to last, providing you take good care of your teeth.

If you have been lax with your dental hygiene before the treatment, now is the time to step up and look after your teeth. This often means sticking to brushing your teeth at least twice a day and, if possible, brushing your teeth after eating, too. Like any other stain, the quicker you can clean up, the less likely it will be to stain – this applies to your teeth, too!

Flossing should also be added to your regimen if it’s not already part of it. This helps reach those places that toothbrushes can’t get to, removing tartar and plaque which can contribute to discolouration.

Lastly, you should book yourself in regularly for a check-up with your dentist. We’ll be able to take a look and give you tailored advice how you can keep your teeth looking beautiful and white – after all, that’s what we specialise in!
